Beautiful knits grow from a marriage of hands and time. F.E. Castleberry knitwear embraces the best quality fibers and age-old techniques achieved only on flatbed knitting machines. These manually powered instruments, manufactured in late 1970s Japan, were originally designed for the homemaker far from the gaze of the fashion-industrial complex.

Machine knitting is, in the truest sense of the expression, a lost art. The now antique Japanese machines were discontinued in the mid-90s and have only survived in the custody of these specialists taking on the duty of both artisan and conservator. After apprenticing in the bucolic South of England, our knitter set up shop in New York to take up the obscure mantle.

It is important at F.E. Castleberry that a piece of clothing always feels like it has been touched by the hand, even when there is machine work involved. Every length of the yarn is at some point manipulated by our artisans. The result is a garment hand-loomed with a manner of care and consideration characteristic of a bygone time.
