Thursday. 11:17 PM. The Nines.

Everybody is smoking. Or so it seems…the biting cold blurs the line between smoke and breath vapor. The procession for The Nines snakes around the corner, chopped up with downtown kids, upper East siders, and a few bridge & tunnel. My spine shivers. I adjust my coat to ward off the chill and light a cigarette while I wait for Daphne.

Of course she’s inside. It’s been seventeen minutes and the line’s moving at a glacial pace. My hands dive deeper into my coat pockets as my ashing American Spirit hangs in the balance from my lips.
